Sometimes in Los Angeles the Santa Ana winds of change blow warm and caressing, taking one’s soul down a haunted memory lane in which the past comes softly knocking. At times like these the best medicine is a stiff drink in a dimly lit joint with crimson red leather booths; a place where time stopped ticking thirty or forty years ago. When the heart needs to be fed and elusive ghosts make themselves visible, it’s time to stop by the Dresden Room to see Marty and Elayne.
Located in the heart of Los Feliz, the Dresden has been in business since 1954. Its decor is a superb unadulterated flashback to its last mid-1960s remodel. Marty and Elayne, a husband and wife lounge act, have been performing here five nights a week since 1982, crooning a strange and seductive jazzy blend of wistful standards.
Offbeat L.A. host Nikki Kreuzer was fortunate to be able to meet with the quirky yet legendary couple and ask them a few questions. Make sure to watch the video posted above…
Marty and Elayne perform Tuesday to Saturday, 9pm-1:15am.
The Dresden Room: 1760 N. Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90027; (323) 665-4294.
